"The business of architecture is to establish emotional relationships by means of raw materials." Le Corbusier

Chance de Silva was set up to explore the possibilities of architecture in interaction with other participants. They might be artists, designers, musicians, community groups or performers. We seek projects which broaden the remit and push at boundaries - which allow exploration and experimentation within parameters defined by the participants. For example, we worked with artists Matt Hale and Frank Watson on our Venus project. Hale's revealed drain, and 'landscape' using domestic fluids, became an integral part of Venus.

We also explore new materials or materials used in new ways. Venus pioneered the use of a new post-patination compound from Norway, on the copper cladding. Its change over time is still being monitored. Similarly we have researched rusting steel for our project Cargo Fleet. Our work is not just about space, or the qualities of materials, but about what they evoke or express.
